House Democrats elected Houston’s Gene Wu — a former Harris County prosecutor entering his seventh term, known for viral floor speeches and needling Republicans online — to chair their caucus, beating incumbent Trey Martinez Fischer 35–24.
Wu took over at a low point for the minority: Democrats had lost two seats in November, leaving them 62 to Republicans’ 88, their weakest position since 2016, and bracing for Abbott’s push for school vouchers.
