Court blocks the arrest of Rep. Gene Wu during the 2021 quorum break
A Harris County judge granted Wu a writ of habeas corpus shielding him from arrest during the 2021 walkout over GOP voting legislation.
During the 2021 standoff over Republican voting legislation, a Harris County criminal court granted Rep. Gene Wu a writ of habeas corpus, shielding him from arrest after Speaker Dade Phelan issued 52 civil warrants for the absent Democrats.
District Attorney Kim Ogg argued the warrants had no place in criminal court — “No crime has been committed by these legislators” — and Wu said he was working to win the same protection for his colleagues.
