ACLU of Texas condemns Abbott’s attempt to expel an elected lawmaker
After Abbott’s emergency petition to remove Wu, the ACLU of Texas called it “a dangerous effort to overturn elections” — and hypocritical from a governor who left a Black-majority Houston district empty for months.
After Gov. Abbott filed an emergency petition asking the Texas Supreme Court to remove House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu over the quorum break, the ACLU of Texas condemned the move as an attack on voters’ choices.
Executive director Oni Blair also called it hypocritical — noting Abbott had let Houston’s 18th Congressional District, home to many Black and Brown residents, “sit empty for more than eight months.”
